HISTORY AND TRADITION:
Castello Banfi is Tuscany’s most honored vineyard estate, with award-winning wines exported to over 90 countries around the world. This winery is well-known for groundbreaking research on the Sangiovese vine. Their products are healthy organic wines low in sulfites and histamines. Castello Banfi is the first winery to be awarded international recognition for exceptional environmental, ethical and social responsibility worldwide.
Banfi is a private concern focused on wine production and import, founded in 1919 in the heart of New York’s Little Italy by John Mariani, Sr. and today run by his grandchildren. The company is named after John’s aunt, Teodolinda Banfi, an eclectic woman who influenced his views toward fine wines. Cristina Mariani-May, the founder’s granddaughter, is the current president and CEO.
Sustainability is a huge concern for this winery, which strives to research low-impact production solutions and material. Banfi collaborates with local glass companies in Italy in the production of a light glass bottle which allows to save glass and protect the environment. Micro-irrigation was also introduced as it helps saving significant amounts of water. “Horizon” is another innovation by Banfi and consists of a new technique of fermentation which takes place in composite vats made of wood and steel. Horizon allows the optimization of both material which enhances the characteristics of the different vines.
