Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, one of the most famous Italian wines in the world, comes from Tenuta San Guido, located in the splendid landscape of the Tuscan Maremma.
The 2016 vintage of Sassicaia is considered the best of the century, with the maximum score of 100/100, according to Robert Parker. This well-known American expert commented that “Sassicaia would seem to be the Michelangelo of this modern Italian Renaissance.” To give an idea about the value of this wine, in September 2015 a case of 1985 Sassicaia was sold for USD 18,375 at a Sotheby’s auction in New York.
Sassicaia (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC): This special wine, originally produced only for the marquis’ house consumption, started to be released commercially in the late 1960s. Shortly after, the demand increased steadly as its excellent quality started to be noticed. Since 1994, Sassicaia is the only wine from a single estate in Italy to enjoy the privilege of its own DOC (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC).
VINE: Cabernet sauvignon 85%, Cabernet franc 15%
VINEYARD: The vineyard extends over 75 hectares (190 acres) around the Bolgheri area, characterized by limestone formations and a high stony content. The name of the wine probably originates from this peculiarity, since “sassicaia” in Italian refers to “stones,” or “stony.”
VINIFICATION: Fermentation takes place in steel, at controlled temperature, and consists of 10 days of maceration of the skins. The wine ages for 24 months in French oak barrels, with subsequent bottling.
HARVEST: Grapes are harvested by hand, from mid September to the end of October 2016.
CHARACTERISTICS: Intense ruby red color with hints of ripe red fruits, berries, aromatic herbs and toasted almonds. Austere, rich and compact taste. Good acid component and sustained body, it progresses on notes of dried fruit with a deep and persistent finish.
PAIRINGS: Ideal with refined second courses based on red meats or game. Excellent with grilled meats, roasts and beef fillets, or with traditional Tuscan dishes based on wild boar.
